Cityscapes, just as much as landscapes inspire me greatly to take out my camera. What I find most ingriguing are how cities have developed over time and how some cities have preserved their character over many hundred years while others havn’t.
Different light settings, wheather or caption can contribute to totally different outcomes. A cityscape captured under blue skies mid morning makes something totally different as the same shot taken late afternoon with threatening storm clouds overhead. And developing that very same shot as a monocrome conversion will often make for another viewing experience altogether. I readily admit that nice, sunny and easy interest me less than moody, darkish or foreboding.
Marseille, France’s 2nd city can look back on 2600 years of history. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans have all left their marks and various waves of immigration have added to the ethnic mix making it a colourful and multycultural experience.
Cities are very complexe systems with different aspects, often contradictory, right next to each other.
Just about every city has its “sores”. Places in every city that have been forgotten, got out of control, were destroyed by neglect or intent. Just have a look here
