The Vatna Jökul Glacier’s 1000-meter thick icecap is calving into Jökulsarlon Lagoon. We took a boat trip with Ice Lagoon Adventures, and it was a fabulous experience we will remember.

Huge icebergs are breaking off the glacier into the lagoon. Who knows, how long their voyage took them slowly moving down the slopes and finally ending up in the lagoon. In the end , some of these icebergs end up as small chunks of ice on Diamond Beach ending their current lifecycles.

Here some pics of the various stages of these icebergs on their last leg.

Getting smaller and showing black traces where clean ice at some stage have been covered by ash resulting from a volcanic eruption.

Getting smaller all the time. Slowly melting and breaking up in the 2 degree warm (or rather cold) water of the lagoon.

This must have been a section of the glacier, that was heavily exposed to a volcano eruption which sent a lot of ash into the atmosphere

Getting smaller still and ending up on an iceberg graveyard called Diamond Beach. Gems on black sand.
