Wild an wet celebrations to welcome the new year. Traditionally, this festival goes over three days. But when it comes to having a good time, Lao people are quite flexible so the party can go on for up to a week.

Clensing the sins of the old year to start the new one fresh. The festival is deeply rooted in Lao tradition with buddhist and animist elements. Temple ceremonies, beauty pageants and processions are all part of the very rich calendar of events. It also provides a window of opportunity for people to “let off steam and let their hair down” in an otherwise conservative society.

Wet, wild and colourful…

It is very inclusive and friendly. The locals make visitors welcome to join the party for as long as they are willing to let themselves go and have a good time

Festive mayhem provides a space for openly suggestive behaviour which would normally not be tolerated in a conservative society tightly controlled by the authorities.
